Dealing with Difficult Students

I have 'that one student.' You know, the one who you really, really try to reach. The one who you try all sorts of motivational techniques on. The one who you know is headed in a very bad direction if he doesn't shape up soon. The one who is sarcastic, rude and disrespectful, no matter how nicely you talk to him.

 

I have that student. And I am fresh out of ideas.

Catch up or recovery?

I've been intrigued by the language of "catch up" which has come from government ministers and even the Children's Commissioner. The idea that lockdown has resulted in lost learning and a widening of the gap can't be disputed but it is the solutions put forward by government which has revealed the reductive nature of the government's attitude to learning and to young people.
