Autism, Thinking Differently

Comment by Sarah J Dodson on December 8, 2012 at 6:03pm This is a wonderful video!!!! It explains how those with autism are all unique and different in their own way. No child or adult with autism is the same. It is very important to get to know the person with autism and try to understand the way they think and see the world. It important to understand and know what environment the student learns best and what you can do to support the child in an academic setting. It is also important to be very reflective about how the lessons went after you teach them. You should always be flexible and open-minded as a teacher towards all students and how they learn best!
Comment by Liz V on October 21, 2012 at 1:54pm I think the main message from this video is that every person with Autism is unique. It is important to learn the ways that your students learn best. This will then allow you to teach your students in the way that will best help them learn. Having multiple ways of teaching a topic, so that all students are learning is what is most important. Another important point to look at is sensory intake. Having a classroom that doesn't have too many posters hanging on the wall to distract students, making sure that if the lights are bothering a student that you find another way to light up the room, providing headphones to block out excess noise, are all ways to help your students. I think that getting to know your students is the number one way to implement best teaching practices. Interviews could be a great option. Making notes, and observing during lessons are a great form of assessment, and can also be used when meeting with parents to discuss progress as well as strengths and weaknesses.
Comment by Alyson Thorp on September 29, 2012 at 10:54pm Temple Grandin explains that she is a very visual person because she thinks in pictures. Therefore, teachers need to understand how their students process information. Gaining an understanding about how a student takes in the learning material will help the teacher to identify appropriate ways to present the learning material. What steps can a teacher take to gain a comprehensive understanding on how a student processes information? Should teachers observe a student during a lesson? Should teachers interview a student?
