The Educator's PLN

The personal learning network for educators

I'm a Math 8 teacher doing a unit on Algebra. I use technology in my instruction (teach with touch-screen tablet computer + digital projector, have a class website with videos, games and resources, blog, etc) but want to find more student-centered activities utilizing technology to promote understanding and engagement in mathematics.

Does anyone have any ideas or want to collaborate on a technogy-rich Algebra unit?

Thanks :)

Hi Laura

Do you have Geogebra at all?  It's free, so you could easily get it installed.  One idea that springs to mind is to get the students to explore properties of graphs eg vertex form of a parabola, using sliders for a, h, and k, then draw conclusions from their exploration.  They could also record their explorations and conclusions using jing, which makes a movie of your screen actions with voice.  Here's an example of what I mean.  I had grade 10 students doing this for square root, absolute value, inverse trig functions etc, recently, and it worked well.  Also have you looked up interactive problem sites such as Regent's prep, Ten Marks, etc - they are good for practice and instant feedback, and the students like that.

I really think the answer is to get kids creating stuff, though, like the geogebra idea.  Another great tool is glogster - great for online posters including video, links, graphics, that kids can use to demonstrate their understanding.  Here's a reflective one I made recently for a course I did.  (By the way the Web 2.0 collaborative instruction course by VHS is great for opening your eyes to new ways of using tech in the classroom.)

Hope this helps,

Liz
