The Educator's PLN

The personal learning network for educators

I recently came across/remembered some great resources/interactives for teaching and researching various Social Studies topics.  Hopefully these will be helpful to some of you.

1.  Civil War 150

http://www.history.com/interactives/civil-war-150#/home

Great resource for teaching or researching the Civil War (great for your visual students).  Civil War 150 focuses on 6 main topics, but is not limited to these:

  • Who they were
  • Weapons of War
  • How they died
  • 5 Deadliest Battles
  • Paying for the War
  • West Point Warriors

2.  Inside World War II

http://www.history.com/interactives/inside-wwii-interactive

Excellent interactive that allows you to zoom in and out of a world map and learn about the people, events, and battles that took place during WWII. This resource includes text, video, and audio.  Great resource to use on an interactive whiteboard.

3.  Newsmap

http://newsmap.jp/#/b,e,m,n,s,t,w/us/view/

Newsmap is an application that visually reflects the constantly changing landscape of the Google News news aggregator.  Newsmap's objective is to simply demonstrate visually the relationships between data and the unseen patterns in news media.

Enjoy!  Please share others that you are using.

Thanks, Kurt,

I appreciate you sharing these.  I saw the Civil War site on Twitter, and bookmarked it.  It's a great one and really interactive.  I'm thinking of developing a scavenger hunt based on it once we cover Civil War next school year.

You might also be interested in adding the NCSS Network Ning site to your social studies resources list (http://ncssnetwork.ning.com/).  While it's not really a student-centered site, it would be a good professional development one.

Thanks for sharing this, I was not aware of it. I especially like the section "Paying for The War".

I am just getting ready to start covering WWII thanks for posting this resource - I plan on linking it to my virtual classroom suite for access by my students. Thanks very much for posting these resources.

Great ideas, thanks for sharing them :) One website that I love is www.pathoftheelders.com. Its a Canadian based website about first nations culture and has a lot of primary source videos and photos, as well as some great teacher resources

More Than a Sport: A Look at Scootering’s Evolution

Too many people do not have a clear idea about what is a Scooter; and much less than there is a sport based on it. Besides, it is a sport that has evolved a lot from its beginning, but if you do not know too much about the sport is hard to see it as more than a kid game. However, this sport is more than just kids and young people making scooter tricks in a square; scootering is a kind of culture and a lifestyle that has more than 20 years growing to become what it is today. For this reason, we…See More
